If you are looking to start a pre-school/day-care center or want to become a Grade R teacher, this is the course for you.
Grade R teaching is a foundation course that has been designed with the aim to understand the principles required to start your own day-care centre. Grade R is the first year of schooling within the foundation phase and prepares children for formal schooling. In the Grade R year, the timetable is called the daily programme which will get the children into the idea of having a routine for the day. Early childhood education is an essential part of a child’s improvement enabling them to be prepared personally and socially for their future. Grade R teaching is designed to increase and intensify your teaching career whereby you will show general principal, as well as focused knowledge and skills appropriate for Grade R teaching.
You will grasp a depth of specialist knowledge, together with practical skills to optimize any teaching-learning situation and positively influence the future of children.

Course Duration
The course is broken down into eight modules to complete in a nine week duration. Each module goes through different aspects of understanding Foundation phase Grade R.

1. Opening up your own Day Care Centre- The way forward:
• Demonstrate basic understanding of how to start a day care.
• The process of Grade R registration under regulations
• Components of registration at different sites
• Understand the process of registering at SACE
• Defining the role of recruitment
2. Management of a Day care center:
• Knowledge concerning the management of a Grade R site.
• Identifying the different leadership styles
• Different roles of all stakeholders
3. Early childhood development (ECD) / Grade R Policy:
• Understanding what a policy is Grade R
• Developing the ability to construct and design an admission and safety policy.
• Knowledge on the Schools Act and Children’s Rights.
4. Manage a Grade R class:
• Have sufficient knowledge of qualifications for Grade R teaching
• Understand the concept of managing a Grade R class
• Know the difference between the play area inside, and outside of the classroom
• Identify relevant equipment
5. Grade R curriculum:
• Understand the concept of a curriculum
• Understand the various options when supporting and reporting to parents
• Develop the ability to understand the CAPS document
6. Admission to a Day Care Centre:
• Have sufficient knowledge regarding the difference between 0-4 years and Grade R
• Understand the admission requirements
• Understand the language barriers in a Day Care Centre
• Demonstrate basic understanding of disabilities when applying for admission
• Parental involvement:
• Understand parents need to be informed about, – and involved in, their child’s education
• Demonstrate knowledge on frequent communication between the teacher and parent
• Understand how communication should take place.
7. Resources:
• Understand how to create your own resources
• Understand the use of appropriate resources
• Practically implement recourse, using resources in a Day Care Centre
